Early morning lessons
Lesson 1: With limited time and resource, make do with what you have
We spent about 20 minutes looking for Jacob’s coat this morning. Needless to say, the coat was nowhere to be found. I gave Jacob Ally's old jacket, which was way too big for him still. The zipper to the jacket was messed up and was hard to put the zippers together to zip the coat up. We rushed out of the house and I figured that I would just have to ask the school to tape the jacket shut or tie a string or something around him so the jacket stays shut while they are out playing.
Lesson 2: The saying, “Your mother doesn’t work here, so clean up after yourself,” only applies if your mother really doesn’t work here.
We get to school and, as part of our new routine; we go to the company’s office area next door to Jacob’s school so he can have hot chocolate before going to his school. Then I would drop him off to school and go to work.
The one time I did not watch him closely to remind him (as I do several times every morning) to be careful so he doesn't spill his drink- what does he do? - He spills the chocolate all over the table and chairs around the table and on to his. I lost another 10 minutes cleaning up the place. I thought that I would not be late coming in to work this morning, but my plans were spoiled.
Lesson 3: It’s helpful to have spare pants
Jacob usually has a change of clothes at school, but not today (it figures). He used his extra pants yesterday because he got his pants muddy, and I didn't bring replacement pants today (I forgot with all the rushing to get out of the house this morning). I rinsed off as much of the chocolate of his pants as I could, which left his pants all wet. To add insult to injury, he was wearing Ally's old jeans that I patched up instead of throwing the jeans out (Ally used to run and land on her one knee and so all her pants had holes on the one knee). I fixed the hole by patching it up with a piece of another old jean material, which was not quite the same color/ shade.
Lesson 4: Precious moments are better preserved with pictures
Jacob looked like a bum with his patched up pants that were all wet with some spots of chocolate on it, topped off with oversized purple girlie jacket and his black cap. Jacob was looking at the bright side and said that at least he didn't spill chocolate all over the coat, which he kept pointing out was Ally's and not his.
I would have taken a picture of him until I realized that I didn't have my (camera) phone. I had switched coats this morning and with the mad rush, forgot my gloves and phone that were in my other coat!
It’s just one of those days when you wish you had a start over button and redo the whole morning!
